the gazz Best Bet: Canstruction Zone

Check out the can-do spirit on display at the Charleston Civic Center where seven groups of engineers, architects and students built elaborate structures entirely out of cans of food. There's a "Peaster Island" statue made of canned peas, a scale model of the State Capitol, a pipe organ and giant open-lidded soup can and opener. The groups didn't just pick whatever was on sale that week, but instead used cans taht were both nutritious and aesthetically appropriate for their designs. The structures were judged Wednesday in categories such as best use of labels and best meal. Winners will be announced Friday at 5:30 at the Civic Center. After that, the structures will be dismantled and the food donated to the Covenant House food pantry.

View the displays for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and tomorrow. Admission is one can of food.
