Covenant House and the American Institute of Architects-West Virginia are partnering for the fourth year in a row to bring a Canstruction competition to The Clay Center in Charleston.

The event’s Steering Committee is currently seeking architects, engineers and contractors, as well as other businesses and civic groups, to design and construct sculptures using canned food.

The deadline to register a team is December 14, 2009.    Click here to download Call for Entries/Registration Form.

Canstruction “Build Day” will be Tuesday, March 2, 2010  at the Clay Center, with the structures displayed from Wednesday, March 3 through Sunday, March 7.

“This event is a perfect opportunity for engineering and architectural firms, as well as other types of businesses and civic groups, to showcase their talents while supporting a local food relief program,” said Phil Warnock from Chapman Technical Group.

All canned goods used in building will go to the Covenant House Food Pantry, a Second Harvest Food Bank.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of individuals and families requesting food assistance.  Without this event, we couldn’t meet the current need that exists,” said Amy Weintraub, Executive Director of Covenant House.  According to Warnock, firms are being solicited now to participate in this event.  Last year, eight teams built structures that netted Covenant House over 20,000 pounds of food.

Civic or student groups who would like to participate in this event can also be matched with an architect or engineer.  “There are some very small firms in this area who do not have the time or personnel to pull something like this off,” said Warnock.  “But if there are groups out there who would like to join this competition, we will try our best to match them with a professional designer to meet the requirements of this event.”

Awards will be presented for:

  • Structural Ingenuity
  • Best Use of Labels
  • Best Meal

  • Juror's Favorite

  • Honorable Mention

  • Most Cans Used

  • People’s Choice
