February 21-24: Canstruction at the Charleston Civic Center. First annual design/build competition benefitting Covenant House's food pantry with seven colossal structures on display created by Charleston's top architecture and engineering firms.

Ending Hunger: A Capitol Idea by Silling Associates Architects & Planners -- "Here in Charleston, the capitol building stands as a shining monument to democracy and as a symbol of civic pride in the State of West Virginia. Our Canstruction is a call to the citizens of West Virginia and our legislators in State Government to unite in the common cause of ending hunger by helping our neighbors in need and through effective legislation. Our Canstruction replicates the scale, proportion and detail of the State’s most revered building, while at the same time offering hundreds of nutritious and delicious meals to its neediest citizens. Together we can end hunger."

iCan by ZMM, Inc. -- "With all the personal entertainment devices on the market today it’s easy to tune out and remove yourself from everything that’s going on around you. We would like to use one of these well known devices traditionally used for getting away and use it to help raise awareness. There are local families in need so plug in and get tuned in. Say it with us. iCan…help with hunger."

ORGANized to Fight Hunger by TERRADON Corporation -- "Our final design is actually a spin-off of our original design, a civil engineering marvel, the Hoover Dam. Our dam model looked more like a pipe organ! So we decided: “Why fight it? Let's go with the creative flow.”

Make a Splash for Hunger by Chapman Technical Group -- We provide this sculpture of a whale splashing into the water in hopes that waves of food and support generated by this competition will benefit the Covenant House Food Pantry.  The sculpture makes use of the labels of 650 cans to create the belly and tail fin of the whale. It is supported from the inside with various canned foods including tomatoes and fruit, as we all need a variety of foods to keep us strong.  Additional waves of staple goods, including pasta, oatmeal and tuna, provide items specifically noted by Covenant House as items that are needed to restock the food pantry.

Warming Up to Fight Hunger by Community & Technical College at WVU Tech -- Nothing warms the heart and body on a cold night like a cup of rich hot chocolate.  This sculpture is intended to remind us all that so many West Virginians depend upon others to help provide a warm meal.  There are a variety of canned foods used here from the bottom of the saucer to the brim of the cup and the “floating” marshmallows.  It is all presented here with “Mountaineer pride” in gold and blue.

Open Wide by The Dow Chemical Company Women's Innovation Network -- Our sculpture depicts a manual can opener, an open can with OPEN WIDE spelled out using different colors, and the lid of the can. We hope the cans in our sculpture are opened wide to fight hunger in the Kanawha Valley.

PEAster Island by Moment Engineers, Inc. --

“The Bad Island Easter” - Robert Frost

That primitive head
So ambitiously vast,
Yet so rude in its art,
Is as easily read
For the woes of the past
As a clinical chart.

“PEAS” - Paul Turner

peas make the world go round and round.
peas make you smile whenever you frown.
peas make you happy whenever you are down.
peas are great cos they are green not brown.
peas really are the best thing in town.
