DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Current Opening

Covenant House – a mission-driven, Charleston, WV non-profit organization helping people in need – seeks an experienced Development Director who will be responsible for organizing and implementing Development activities. 

This represents an excellent opportunity to plan and manage a significant program of giving that will provide fundamental support for people in need.  The successful candidate will be responsible for expanding all aspects of the current program including individual giving, focused group giving, and seeking grants.

REPORTS TO:  Executive Director

SUPERVISES:  Development Intern(s), Development Volunteers

DUTIES include:

  • Developing and implementing, with input and assistance from Covenant House staff, board members and key stakeholders, a comprehensive development plan that ensures the short-term and long-term financial stability and viability of Covenant House.
  • Planning and carrying out efforts to renew gifts from current donors including individuals, corporations, and faith communities;
  • Identifying new prospects; planning and implementing efforts to cultivate and solicit them;
  • Writing solicitation and acknowledgement letters;
  • Preparing grant proposals;
  • Soliciting current and prospective donors;
  • Communicating with donors on a timely and regular basis;
  • Planning and organizing fundraising events in conjunction with Event Planner;
  • Planning and organizing donor recognition events;
  • Supporting the Director with her fundraising efforts, which include making solicitation appointments and handling follow-up efforts;
  • Providing staff support to the Development Committee and working with other Board members to promote their active involvement in fundraising;
  • Creating new fundraising vehicles, such as a planned giving campaign and naming opportunities;
  • Drafting and presenting, as required, reports for funders on projects they have financed, as well as updates for the Board and Executive Committee;
  • Utilizing the Development database (Raiser’s Edge);
  • Preparing a budget for Development needs as part of the annual budget process; overseeing the implementation of that budget.
  • Managing the solicitation and receipt of in-kind gifts and in-kind donor acknowledgement.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant experience with demonstrated success required, such as multiple years of experience working as a development officer or in a related occupation.
  • Record of actively securing gifts from individual donors and foundations, as well as working effectively with staff and board members – or proven similar experience.
  • Interest in and commitment to the work and mission of Covenant House.
  • Promptness and attention to detail.
  • A self-starter.
  • An ability to represent Covenant House in speech and writing.
  • A readiness to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with computers and databases.
  • Familiarity with preparing a budget.
  • Master's degree, though bachelor’s degree is acceptable.

 

EMPLOYEE STATUS: This is a full-time position requiring work on evenings and weekends from time to time.

COMPENSATION:    Salary range for this professional position is competitive and based on proven qualifications of candidate.  Covenant House offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision benefits; a retirement plan; and paid time off.

CLASSIFICATION:  Exempt

EMPLOYER: Covenant House is dedicated to working for justice by offering direct services for people in need while creating social change through advocacy and education.  Programs include a Drop-In Center (day shelter), a food pantry, a clothing closet, homeless prevention and rapid re-housing, housing programs for people with HIV/AIDS, technical assistance with federal benefits, public policy advocacy, and public health education programs.
