Alliance for Justice travels to Charleston to provide advocacy information and training to the nonprofit sector with a goal toward encouraging greater civic participation in our democratic system -- especially among underrepresented communities.
Being A Player: The Rules around Lobbying and Advocacy 2 – 2.5 Hours
This session covers the federal laws governing 501(c)3 lobbying, including how to calculate your lobbying limits under the insubstantial part test and the 501(h) expenditure test, definitions for direct and grassroots lobbying, exemptions to the definition of lobbying and the application of these rules to ballot measure activities as well as how to track your organization’s lobbying activity for IRS reporting purposes. This workshop demonstrates simple techniques for tracking your organization’s lobbying and other advocacy activities.
This session will answer questions like: What kinds of activities are considered lobbying? Can we lobby? What if we get government money? If we are lobbying do we need to report it on our 990? We should we lobby? What is the difference between lobbying and advocacy?
The Rules of the Game: Election Year Advocacy 1 – 1.5 Hours
This session covers the federal rules regarding electoral activities for 501(c)(3)s, including voter registration drives, candidate questionnaires, candidate forums and legislative scorecards.
This session will answer questions like: Are we allowed to support candidates running for office? Can members of our organization support candidates in their free time? What activities can we do in an election year? Can we work with groups who are helping candidates? How can we interact with candidates safely?
Coalitions 1 hour
This session examines the different roles of 501(c)(3)s, (4)s and political organizations, and explores the federal tax rules on how these organizations can work together. It will also examine the legal separations necessary between affiliated organizations, such as funding and fundraising constraints and permissible electoral activities.
